1. You must be on a plethora of substances to attend an EDM show
This is probably the biggest misconception of EDM. There is this culture surrounding EDM which gives the false impression that EVERYONE who goes to EDM shows is doing drugs. It is true that there are some people who go just to get messed up and dance their faces off, but there are also a good chunk of people who really enjoy the music and don’t feel the need to be under any influence to enjoy it.
2. Everyone is down to hook up
This is another huge problem in the EDM scene because this misconception draws in a lot of horn dogs who wouldn’t be at an EDM concert in the first place without this stereotype. Just like at any concert, there is a ton of love, dancing and not much personal space but that doesn’t mean every guy or girl there is trying to hook up.
3. You must dress like a raver
It’s always fun to dress up and express yourself but there is no need to feel like you are required to drench yourself in kandi and wear binkies just because other people are.
4. You should always be down for a light show
At almost every EDM show there will be a large amount of glovers, hoopers and go-go dancers. But these awesome light shows are not something you should feel like you have to participate in. From personal experience I can say that it’s not always the best idea to try to get a light show when there are over 10,000 people packed into one small venue. Sometimes it’s just more fun to dance your butt off and enjoy the music.
5. You won’t have a good time unless you go with Molly
Molly is unfortunately a huge part of the EDM scene but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the power to change that. Only the fans of this music can change the culture that surrounds it. We have the power to break these stereotypes and to give EDM a good reputation. Let us stand for peace, love, unity, and respect; not for some synthesized drug that makes us feel like crap the next day.
